A recall has been issued for apples sold at Kroger and ALDI stores around the country over possible Listeria concerns.

The potentially infected apples were sold at Kroger between Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 in Michigan, Georgia, Missouri, Indiana, and Ohio. They were also sold at ALDI stores in Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina and North Carolina beginning on Dec. 13.

Listeria Monocytogenes can cause serious illnesses and sometimes death.

An estimated 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die according to the CDC.

Apple Ridge apples are sold and distributed by Jack Brown Produce based in Sparta, Michigan. The supplier of the apples is Nyblad Orchards, Inc.

Below are the different apples that are included in this recall according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

  • Honeycrisp apples in 2-pound clear plastic bags;
  • Gala, Fuji, and Golden Delicious apples in 3-pound clear plastic bags;
  • Fuji and Gala apples in 5-pound red-netted mesh bags; and
  • Gala, Fuji and Honeycrisp apples that were tray-packed/individually sold.

Listeria Monocytogenes can cause serious illnesses and sometimes death. The FDA says no illnesses have been reported to date from this recall.

The potentially-affected products have the following lot numbers printed on the bag label or bag-closure clip:

  • Fuji: NOI 163, 165, 167, 169, 174
  • Honeycrisp: NOI 159, 160, 173
  • Golden Delicious: NOI 168
  • Gala: NOI 164, 166 on either the product labels or bag-closure clip.
